Shave or Trim pubic hairs?

I've never done this before because I have never really had a reason too. Now my girlfriend says she wants me to get a little trim of the south pole region. Whats the best way (shaving, trimming, etc) and how do I do it right? I'm kind of a naturally hairy guy all over so which way is best for me?
