He's your ex. Unless you've been talking about getting back together, I really don't think it's beneficial for you to be spending this much of your time and energy trying to determine how lucky you are to be out of the relationship. Just be glad that you are and move on - and make sure the next guy knows that secret pictures and mushy texts will not be tolerated.
